Karl Fairburne, the main protagonist and the main character of the game.

The main character is Lt. Karl Fairburne, an SOE and OSS officer who is inserted into Germany in 1945, during the final days of World War II. It references Operation Paperclip and its predecessor Operation Overcast, the plan by the USA to recruit the leading rocket scientists of Nazi Germany. Fairburne comes up against both Nazi and Soviet opponents as he tracks key individuals involved with the development of the V-2 ballistic missile.

The campaign begins with a tutorial mission (Prologue), in which Fairburne must assassinate German Major-General Hans von Eisenberg, who is attempting to defect to the Soviet Union. The next mission (Schöneberg Convoy), a slightly altered version of the demo, has Fairburne kill Dr. Gunther Kreidl, a Nazi rocket scientist, and escape with mission-critical documents in Kreidl's possession. Next, Fairburne infiltrates a V2 rocket production facility (Mittlewerk Facility) in search of the remaining German scientists from von Eisenberg's team; he finds no trace of his targets, but learns that one of them, Dr. Efram Schwaiger, has been captured while trying to defect to the American side, and was now being detained at the Opernplatz, awaiting execution. Fairburne is discovered, but manages to escape the facility, which is destroyed in the process.

Execute

Schwaiger about to be executed.

Ordered to secure Schwaiger as an important asset instead of killing him, Fairburne begins making his way towards the Opernplatz. In order to distract the Germans, he locates a cache of explosives and destroys a bridge (Kaiser-Friedrich Museum), provoking the Soviets into attacking a German garrison at an abandoned museum. As expected, German reinforcements arrive to defend the position, allowing Fairburne to slip by during the ensuing chaos. The plan works, and Fairburne infiltrates a German military camp at the Opernplatz (Opernplatz), where he saves Schwaiger from execution in the nick of time. He then provides covering fire as the scientist flees to safety, before holding off a detachment of Soviet troops sent to capture him. Schwaiger is mortally wounded in the process, however, and with his dying words states that "Wolff has a plan" involving someone or something called "Tabun". Confused and clueless, Fairburne proceeds with this mission: after retrieving some misdropped equipment and surviving a German ambush (St. Olibartus Church), he hunts down his fourth target, Colonel Müller, whom he kills with a long-distance shot from atop a flak tower (Tiergarten Flak Tower) during an air raid on Berlin.

Hoping to learn the whereabouts of Dr. Wolff, his last target, Fairburne raids a Soviet special operations command post (Karlshorst Command Post), where he obtains intel revealing that "Tabun" is a powerful and lethal nerve agent, and that Wolff has masterminded a plan to help Soviets load the last of Germany’s V2 rockets with it and launch them at London, with the intention of later making the attack look like Germany’s final act of revenge. Deciding to postpone Wolff’s assassination and prioritize stopping the V2 launch, Fairburne begins to look for clues regarding the location of the launch site. His search leads him to Wolff's private office (Kreuzberg HQ) near the German Ministry of War, where he finds a notebook revealing Wolff's plan to escape aboard a Soviet airplane and a tattered map detailing the locations of all V2 storage facilities and launch sites. He sets out to destroy the rockets (Köpenick Launch Site) and is ultimately successful.

With only Wolff left to deal with, Fairburne goes back to the Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburg Gate), where only a few days earlier he had assassinated von Eisenberg. Fairburne makes his way to the top of the structure and, with a single, desperate shot, critically injures Wolff as he's speeding away, causing his car to swerve and flip over. As the Battle of Berlin comes to an end, Fairburne remarks that World War II may be over, but that a new conflict - the Cold War - has just begun, and that he is this war's first soldier.

Sniper Elite V2 is a third-person shooter that stresses employing stealth, rather than using brute force. Fairburne uses several WWII-era weapons, including sniper rifles, a silenced Welrod pistol, sub-machine guns and German and Soviet hand grenades (which can be also used to make tripwire booby traps). One of the main features of the title is the realistic ballistics, involving factors such as bullet drop, wind strength, and the effect of holding one's breath when attempting a shot. Sniping gameplay is from a first person scope view, whereas movement and use of all other weapons is in third person view.

The new features in Sniper Elite V2 allowing player to have "X-Ray Killcam"

A major difference from the original Sniper Elite is the introduction of a controversial ‘X-Ray Kill Cam’, which activates when the player makes a particularly extreme shot.

The view then follows the path of the bullet in slow motion before slowing further as it reaches its target, whereupon the target’s body is rendered as an anatomical cutaway to show the bullet’s passage through the body and the damage it causes to organs and bones. Other new elements include being able to mark enemy fighters to highlight their position along with target information, and a white-outlined figure which marks the point where enemy soldiers last spotted the player so that players can make their escape.
